Joanne Elek, Managing Director
Joanne is a founding partner of Ambit Search, a Toronto search firm that specializes in executive search for financial and operational executives across all industry sectors. At the end of 2018, Ambit Search joined Farber thereby increasing our business service offerings to candidates and clients. Joanne is a Managing Director within the Interim Management & Executive Search practice of Farber.
Joanne began her career in healthcare, holding a variety of positions in both management and labour relations at Mt. Sinai and The Toronto Hospital. In 1996, Joanne joined the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Ontario to manage human resources. Her tenure with the ICAO provided her with a unique perspective on the challenging and rigorous process of becoming a designated finance professional and the careers that await them.
Joanne has specialized in the recruitment of finance, accounting, and operational professionals at the mid-to-senior level across all industry sectors since 1999. Her most recent portfolio is focused in professional services, media, healthcare, pharma & cannabis, manufacturing and technology with an emphasis on mid-market companies. She is highly respected within the executive search industry and is known for her integrity, honesty, professionalism, and discretion.
She has developed a search practice built on strong, long-term relationships. Joanne’s style is highly personalized and she provides people with overall career perspective and advice. She is a trusted business advisor to clients and candidates alike.
Joanne has been a volunteer advisor for many years with CPA Canada and is currently a member of the Advisory Board for Sustainable Business (ABSB). In this role, she works with members of the profession to provide insight and perspectives on issues facing the CPA profession today. She is a graduate of the Executive Human Resources Program at the University of Toronto’s Rotman School of Management as well as programs at the University of Toronto and Ryerson Polytechnic University.

Carla Murphy, BJ(Hon), MI, Senior ConsultantCarla is an experienced recruiter specializing in finance and administrative roles. Prior to joining Ambit Search, Carla earned a Bachelor of Journalism, Honours and Master of Information and brings expertise in research, interviewing, and discovering what makes companies, and people, tick to every search she undertakes.
Three themes have run throughout Carla’s professional life – a keen interest in the unique characteristics of people and organizations, finding the information needed to make cognizant decisions, and synthesizing the two to help her clients fulfill their goals.
She has successfully identified and attracted talent for a wide variety of roles, ranging from senior financial analyst to director-level. Carla takes great pride in fostering a close relationship with both candidates and clients to gain a thorough understanding of the strategic objectives of both, thereby ensuring the best possible fit.
With three active sons, Carla has learned a lot about football, soccer, and hockey over the years. When she does have some personal time, she can usually be found baking or reading a novel that doesn’t involve sports.

Janet McAlpine, BA (Econ), Director
Janet has a BA Economics from the University of Western Ontario. She has more than 25 years of experience recruiting senior finance professionals across all industry sectors with an emphasis on mid-market companies. She is known for her insight and rigour in tackling challenging searches with an operational and strategic lens.
Janet draws upon her deep knowledge from her years of business development and candidate recruiting to focus on information and knowledge management systems, market mapping and analysis in support of the search process, identification of business development opportunities, industry reporting and market analysis, and finding solutions to support client and operational needs related to talent sourcing.
When not in the office, Janet enjoys gardening, playing Duplicate Bridge, going to the theatre or hosting dinner parties with friends and family.
