“Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.”
So said Warren Buffett, perhaps the most successful and renowned value investor of all time. Buffett is probably right (he usually is), but beyond that, the key is of course making sure you plant the right trees, at the right place, and nurture them over time. This adage holds true whether you’re looking to invest your money or in your career; companies that are strategically minded, growth-oriented and committed to excellence are always a wise long-term choice.
Our client is a Canadian public company, based in downtown Toronto and with operations across North America and Europe. Over the past 20 years, their business has grown exponentially, both organically and through strategic acquisitions, creating a $2B+ powerhouse. Years of visionary planning and an unrelenting commitment to success have certainly borne fruit, but they’re keenly aware that being #1 today does not guarantee leadership tomorrow. It takes the right people.
They are currently seeking a bright and adept tax professional to join their corporate team in the newly-created role of Director of Tax. Reporting to an accomplished VP Taxation and working within a dynamic, entrepreneurial environment, this individual will be a key contributor to the organization with respect to all aspects of corporate tax, including compliance, provisions and planning.
Primary responsibilities, which will evolve over time, will include:
- Prepare and review of US corporate tax returns and other annual informational returns;
- Oversee and manage the preparation of quarterly and annual tax provisions;
- Research and follow up on various tax issues, and effective communication of tax matters within the organization;
- Assist with tax planning and analysis related to potential acquisitions, reorganizations and divestitures;
- Management of various federal, state and provincial tax audits.
This is a broad role that calls for a CPA, CA, ideally combined with a US CPA designation, and 7+ years’ progressive experience that includes hands-on proficiency completing corporate tax returns and provisions. Prior exposure to US corporate tax and a strong working knowledge of US GAAP as it pertains to multi-national public companies will round out the profile. Finally, the successful candidate will be technically skilled, but should also possess superior critical thinking, analytical and inter-personal skills. The corporate team is both entrepreneurial and professional, and rewards value-driven leaders who prove they can contribute.
